Schools Rugby 7's World Cup

Who is the world’s best rugby school?

It is a question that has lit up internet forums and stirred vigorous debate amongst rugby crowds for years, now there may finally be an answer, at least in the 7’s arena, the Schools Rugby 7’s World Cup.

The Schools Rugby 7’s World Cup will be held in Shanghai, China in December 2015, with some of the world’s schoolboy rugby powerhouses expected to challenge for the title of World Champion. Invitations have been sent to a select number of schools in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, England, Ireland and Canada.

Joeys and Churchie in Australia are often thrown into the debate of best rugby school with their dominance of their respectives schools competitions and their recent schoolboy to Super Rugby to Wallaby stars Kurtley Beale (Joeys), Quade Cooper and David Pocock (Churchie).

Auckland Grammar, Christchurch Boys High and Hamilton Boys High also have strong claims on the title with their long list of All Blacks as former students and notable wins over some of their international compatriots at rugby tournaments.

The boys from the veldt and coasts of South Africa may also enter the argument with Paul Roos Gymnasium recently trumping a number of other fancied schools at a recent event.

Blackrock College of Ireland, boasting the most capped international ever, Brian O’Driscoll amongst its past students have a strong claim from the northern hemisphere along with schools like Dulwich College and Wellington College in the birth place of rugby.

With the explosion in popularity of 7’s over the last decade which has only intensified with the inclusion at the Rio Olympics there are thoughts that a winner could emerge from outside one of the traditional like Shawnigan Lake School of Canada.

The event will be hosted by the Shanghai Pudong Sports Bureau and the Chinese Rugby Football Association culminating on the 20th December with a school walking away with the title of World Champion
